Find similar files and duplicates

Have one useful file already? Use it to find related content. If you are cleaning up copies, use the separate duplicate search.

Find similar content

1. Browse an indexed folder in Fenn’s main window.
2. Select a file.
3. Use Find similar files, or the similar-file action in its menu.
4. Review the results and the source-file banner.

Try a photo of a landscape to find related scenes, or a document to find others on a similar topic. This is useful when you can recognize what you want but struggle to describe it.

Visual and meaning-based similarity needs All Files indexing.

Find duplicate copies

1. Right-click an indexed folder in the left sidebar.
2. Choose Find Duplicates.
3. Start with This Folder, or use Everywhere for a broader check.
4. Review the groups and choose which copy to keep.

Similar files are not necessarily duplicates. Two photos of the same subject can be different files you want to keep.

Remove unwanted copies

Check filenames and locations before selecting extra copies. Use Move to Trash only for the files you want to remove, then read the confirmation.

This changes the actual files on your Mac. You can recover them from Trash until it is emptied.

If no duplicates appear, you can still use similarity search to find related material, but review those results individually.
